Preservation Iowa 2014 Preservation at its Best

Each year Preservation Iowa seeks to honor statewide successes through the “Preservation at its Best Awards”. The awards are meant to inspire others to take action to preserve, protect, and promote Iowa’s historic resources. Additionally these projects highlight the work being done around the state to preserve historic infrastructures by re-purposing them to allow reintegration into their local communities. Many of these projects encourage community growth by stimulating the local economy through housing and bringing Iowans back into their historic districts. This encourages the preservation of Iowa’s rich heritage.

Des Moines Sherman Hill historic home move, remodel and green rehabilitation by Silent Rivers

The small bungalow sits on “cribs” waiting to be rolled down the hill to the new foundation.

Silent Rivers was especially proud to receive the “Preservation at its Best” award for our green rehabilitation of this Sherman Hill home. The house was slated for demolition due to a parking lot expansion. The Sherman Hill Neighborhood Association worked with Silent Rivers to move the home to a new location.

The home was then gutted and completely remodeled with several smart solutions to ensure this home remains a lovely residence for generations to come. See all the great photos and read more at the links below.
