Our clients wanted to create a great room addition on their historic home. Since a turn of the century brick colonial home would not normally contain such a large space, it was paramount to complement its traditional character. The new family room, designed to look like a carriage house, is connected to the main house by a breezeway that balances the proportion of the addition. A new stair in the breezeway improves access to their lower level spa. The additional space provided opportunity to reorient the bathroom access away from the kitchen. The grid of the coffered ceiling in the great room helps provide intimacy. Craft was key; great attention was placed on blending new custom cabinets and millwork with 100-year-old wood. Similar attention was paid to matching brick style and mortar composition.

Having debated when to initiate this project, our clients ultimately decided to invest in a space their entire family could enjoy now and for years to come.
