This national award winning remodel in Johnston began with the homeowners’ desire to update the kitchen in a way that tied together several other recently remodeled rooms in the house. This would integrate the kitchen with other living areas to facilitate entertaining and daily living for a family of five. The homeowners also wanted to respect the strong modern aesthetic of the original 1966 home design, while ultimately creating something more contemporary.
After removing walls and opening up the space, the kitchen now integrates five different seating areas, a walk-in pantry, a lofted playroom, music area and screened in porch. These are enhanced by many exceptional details. A television was placed inside the kitchen island on a lift that can rotate 180o in either direction. When it’s not in use, the screen lowers and is hidden. Other elements are a 650-gallon saltwater aquarium, a custom wall-mounted ladder and a hatch opening to the lofted playroom, and a mix of new naturally finished Birch cabinetry with the original Birch cabinetry that was finished as much as 48 years ago.
dsm Magazine features this kitchen in the Jan/Feb 2016 issue.
Professional Remodeler magazine named this the Project of the Year in their 2015 Design Awards.
