Working with Silent Rivers on multiple remodeling projects, additions and landscaping over a period of years allowed this family of five to completely renovate their midcentury home in Johnston. Planning each project to flow from one to the next enabled this home to grow as the family grew and schedules became more active. Celebrating their Danish heritage and love of entertaining both indoors and out provided a theme and centralizing purpose to steer the evolution of this home while honoring its midcentury roots.
Silent Rivers artisans created an addition that houses an indoor pool as well as a roof deck. Outdoor play structures connected by unique bridges and walkways are fun for adults and kids alike. The front courtyard features concentric circles that showcase a reflecting pool and large sculpture.
The main living area was opened up by removing walls to allow views of the magnificent outdoor living areas. Gathering spaces now exist around the kitchen allowing ample space to hang out while meals are prepared. A mixture of materials are cleverly positioned to allow both old and new elements to co-exist, such as an original white steel cabinet amongst the new Birch cabinetry.
Adventurers can climb a floating ladder to the lofted play area above the music room, or cross a swinging bridge to access the next level of the treehouse in the backyard. The indoor pool features fountains and color changing lights, while the patio features a snow melt system. Even the kitchen counter contains a surprise. A pop-up television is hidden within. An under utilized closet in the dining room now showcases a giant saltwater aquarium.
The adventure shared between this family and Silent Rivers has produced a collaboration that has won multiple design and remodeling awards. View more details within each project of this stunning home.
